**所 (suǒ)** is very formal — you'll rarely hear "一所房子" in casual speech! Used mainly for institutions: schools, hospitals, banks. "一所大学" sounds grander than "一所学校." 所 originally meant "place/dwelling" (as in 厕所 restroom). So "一所学校" literally = "a place of teaching." Extremely common in news broadcasts and government documents.
