🏮 Cultural Story
中文 Chinese
English
**片 (piàn)** hides its origin in its shape — it is literally half of the character 版 (bǎn), originally a split wooden slab. More interestingly, it spreads into one whole surface: 一片海 (a sea), 一片森林 (a forest) — here 片 means not "thin" but "a vast expanse." One character covers both.
💡 Memory Tip
片 is for flat, thin pieces or areas. A slice of bread, a field of grass, a piece of land.
